Nashua CHIROPRACTIC TIP OF THE MONTH: Exercise the Quadratus Lumborum

The quadratus lumborum – a quadrilateral-shaped muscle - is a paired muscle on the left and right side of the abdominal wall. It is a deep muscle and typically thought of as a back muscle as it extends from the 12th rib to the upper 4 lumbar vertebrae. When contracted, the quadratus lumborum produces lateral flexion of the lumbar spine and/or elevation of the pelvis. (5) Various bridge-type exercises are being examined as to how they strengthen the quadratus lumborum’s 2 layers of muscle in order for it to best add to the motor control of the lumbar pain and stop back pain. (6) Moriarty Chiropractic and you can discuss how your spine may benefit from such exercise at your next Nashua chiropractic visit to Moriarty Chiropractic.
